Masters of the Shadowlands 1-3: a first look into Cherise’s world of kink

I have been treating myself to reading the Masters of the Shadowlands series by Cherise Sinclair. It’s a sexy BDSM series that was recommended to me a fair while ago. I’d had it on my TBR list for an age and just felt like trying something a little different. I started reading book #1 (more info below) and I just kept reading, I ended up reading 5 of the 6 available books in the last week. I’ve also just read the synopsis for book #6 and I’ll have to read that one too now.

Cherise’s series has been making waves in the kink community and was gaining in popularity even before the 50 shades of grey hysteria! If you’d like to delve into this much more realistic (although not perfect) view of a D/s lifestyle, join the masses devouring this series.

Club Shadowlands (Masters of the Shadowlands #1)

Synopsis: Her car disabled during a tropical storm, Jessica Randall discovers the isolated house where she’s sheltering is a private bondage club. At first shocked, she soon becomes aroused watching the interactions between the Doms and their subs. But she’s a professional woman–an accountant–and surely isn’t a submissive…is she?

Master Z hasn’t been so attracted to a woman in years. But the little sub who has wandered into his club intrigues him. She’s intelligent. Reserved. Conservative. After he discovers her interest in BDSM, he can’t resist tying her up and unleashing the passion she hides within.

Publisher’s Note: This book contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations that some readers may find objectionable: Anal play/intercourse, strong BDSM theme and content (including/not limited to bondage, caning, restraints, spanking, etc), exhibitionism, voyeurism.

Thoughts: 155 pages was devoured in about 4 hours of reading on boxing day. I was drawn into Cherise’s world quite quickly.

Review: Well, well well. It happens to be 1am and I am writing this review now so I don’t skew it with what will likely be very spicy dreams!

There were aspects of Club Shadowlands that didn’t work. Namely, the unoriginal beginning, and the slightly annoying and hugely convenient plot filler that Master Z possesses. These aside, the way Cherise introduces the reader to the D/s lifestyle was well done. Aspects of play that seemed forced or unexpected was well explained and justified.

For the ladies and gents reading, if you can’t find a hot character to drool over, there is something wrong with you. This book is clearly a holiday destination for sex Gods and Goddesses.

I found the dialogue to be realistic and flirty. It made me smile, it also made me cry. Weird I know, but there it is!

I will be reading more by Cherise! I can’t wait to emerge myself once again in the pleasure that is her writing.

Dark Citadel (Masters of the Shadowlands #2)

CS#2Synopsis: After Kari breaks up with her date during Beginner’s Night at Club Shadowlands, she’s given the option to continue with an experienced dominant. Despite her steamy fantasies about BDSM, the inexperienced schoolteacher plans to simply observe. Yet under the unyielding hands of Master Dan, she not only participates, but gives him everything he asks for. There is nothing she can hide from him. Not her passion…or her love.

Publisher’s Note: This book contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations some readers may find objectionable: Anal play/intercourse, BDSM theme and content (including/not limited to bondage, caning, restraint, spanking, tethering) exhibitionism, voyeurism.

Thoughts: 152 pages of slightly less exciting reading. A bit of a let down.

Review: Right, well… This book was a bit of a let down. After the hotness and realness that was Club Shadowlands, I wanted more. I did not get it.

Kari and Dan were great characters, they had personality, they had flaws and they were anything but perfect, this was good. What was bad, well, I didn’t like all the emotional baggage that they had, sure some of it was good, realistic, believable, but all of it… Um… No.

The play, well this seemed a little flat, flaccid, and less interesting than book #1, this is not so say it’s bad, on the contrary, it was actually quite good, just not as good as the first. On that note, I think there were certain scenes that worked better than others. Ones that come to mind: the bar and the garden were good D/s type scenes and that shower scene… Um wow! I think I needed a cold shower.

I liked bringing in Master Z and Jessica from book #1, I liked the ‘training’ this intrigued me, I wanted to know more.

I did get a little over the clueless sub routine, the constantly questioning the Dom routine and the “oh my, I’m in public” routine. I may be being a bit pickier this round, but it still kept me reading, it still got the blood pumping, the heart racing and the flushed cheeks happening. I will be reading book #3!

3 stars

Breaking Free (Masters of the Shadowlands #3)

Synopsis: Beth must yield to become aroused, but she’s too scared to give up control. The last thing she wants is a ruthless, powerful Dom. But that’s just what she gets, and exactly what she needs…

A sadistic husband left Beth scarred, inside and out. Only at the Shadowlands BDSM club does she feel like a woman. But her fears limit her to Doms who won’t overwhelm her— the very ones who cannot arouse her. The Master of the Shadowlands gives her an ultimatum: accept the Dom he assigns or lose her membership. The last thing Beth wants is a ruthless, powerful Dom, but that’s just what she gets.

Asked to take on a problem sub, Nolan sees the issue immediately— although truly submissive, the little redhead is too scared to relinquish control and her Doms have let her get away with it. That will change right now.

As Master Nolan takes Beth under command, compelling her submission, she’s terrified, but the experienced Dom brings her pleasure, not pain. His only demand is that she never lie to him. Under his capable hands, her body comes alive, and she begins to heal. As he pushes her limits, she learns to trust…and then to love. And she realizes he is beginning to care for her in return.

But now her cruel husband has found her, and Master Nolan discovers she’s been lying and lying and lying…

Publisher’s Note: This book contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations that some readers may find objectionable: Anal play/intercourse, BDSM theme and elements (including/not limited to bondage, caning, domination, restraint, paddling, spanking, submission, tethering); exhibitionism, ménage, violence.

Thoughts: 170 pages of Cherise back on track. I devoured this one too.

Review: I think Cherise is back on her game with this one, what was missing from book #2 (Dark Citadel), has been found and placed into this book.

I have to admit I didn’t much like Nolan in book #2, he seemed cranky and hard and a bit broken. I am happy to report, that he is really none of those things, just merely a bit battered and bruised.

I felt we got more ‘brain time’ in this book, which meant – among other things – that we could understand more of why the characters behaved the way they did. It worked extremely well for me, I came to feel strongly for both Nolan and Beth. This was by far the best book in the series. It isn’t the best book because the sexy stuff is hot, (it is, but I still preferred book #1 for the most part), it is because of the background and side story that it worked.

The one exception to the I preferred book 1 statement above, would have to be the party, I enjoyed that.

To gain the coveted 5 star rating from me, Cherise will need to incorporate the depth of the characters and background/side story with the sexiness from book #1. I long to read that book!

  2. I like the fist sentence in the synopses of Club Shadowlands “Her car disabled during a tropical storm” – yeah that happened to me, but I wasn’t lucky enough to end up in a private bondage club, instead my dog pooed himself! 😀 (sorry the tropical storm brought this awful memory back!)

The three books sound intriguing, but I’ve never read an erotica book before. Maybe Cherise used all the ‘hot’ scenes in book one and had nothing new for book 2 – I’m never sure why some authors go into a lull when they write a sequel. I’m about to do it and I’m worried my readers will be disappointed with a second book of The Eleventh Question (I’m still tossing up the idea).

    Excellent reviews 😀

    • They are enjoyable books Dianne, I am not sure what Cherise didn’t do in the second book , but it just fell flat. I can tell you, the same thing happened in book 4 too.

I know what you mean about some sequels being very poor, I have read my fair share. I am sure you will do fine though.

If you are feeling a bit experimental, give them a try.

Lol! Poor puppy, my dog is scared of thunder and lightning, she’d be a wreck if we got caught in a thunderstorm.
